By Loretta Barger Hanson, Business Partner for 43 years
And former wife of 30 years

Gene was born in Florence, Kansas and had an older brother Bob. The family
later moved to Bakersfield in the 40’s where his younger brother Rodney was born.

Gene lived and went to school in Bakersfield and in high school, he and his best
friend Dave became avid body builders. He and his brother Bob also spent many hours
riding their “used scooter” in the foothills, and the same amount of time repairing it.

Gene moved to Los Angeles in the late 50’s, having several different jobs, and
then became the Finance and Insurance Manager for Harry Mann Chevrolet, where he
met Loretta when she bought her Corvette. They subsequently married in 1970. In 1972
they became business partners in Sherman Oaks Honda, where he ran the business and
she did the bookwork at night, while working for the City of Los Angeles. In the 70’s
they rode a lot of miles on a Honda 750 and Goldwing. Especially memorable trips to
Carmel and Monterey via Highway 1. They always loved dogs and cats, and had
Siberian Huskies and a Keeshonds.

In 1976, Harley-Davidson® Motor Co. came to them at Sherman Oaks Honda and told
them they wanted to open a dealership in the West Valley and asked if they would do so.
They agreed, and proceeded to find a suitable property, which is the current location of
Barger Harley-Davidson®. They built a new building and oversaw the construction.
When completed Loretta came to work at Barger Harley-Davidson® on a full-time basis.
They became a dealership in 1977, again with each of them a 50% owner and have
operated Barger Harley-Davidson® together for the last 37 years. Many customers
may also remember “Fat Bob” the black cat that lived at the dealership for
about 19 years. In the 80’s he appeared in monthly ads in the Cycle Trader
and later their Siberian Huskies also advertised for the dealership.
Those were some of the fun times……………

In the 80’s they bought a Piper Airplane, and had many fun hours traveling to neat
breakfast spots in California – Death Valley, Palm Springs, Cabo San Lucas, in Baja…….
where they met many nice people who loved to fly airplanes. Gene also loved to build
model airplanes, where he would fly them at the Sepulveda Basin Model Airplane Field.

Gene and Loretta rode many miles on our Harleys….which were sure a lot more
comfortable than the Hondas. Some of the favorite rides were to Solvang,
and up the Coast to Santa Barbara, San Diego…………………………

We will remember all the good times and experiences of the last 50 years and
wish Gene a safe ride and farewell to his new home.
He will be missed by all.
